People do a lot of work. Work often receives a great deal of one’s conscious thought. Work is both a means to an end and an end in and of itself. Work is important. Work can influence how we see ourselves, how people treat us, where we live, and what we do. Given all that work influences, it is fair to say that our relationship to and with work is likely complicated. People could simultaneously be grateful and bored, frustrated and hopeful, or serious and inappropriate. A great deal is packed into work. Determining if one’s work and approach to work are fulfilling is an interesting point of inquiry. If it is, that is wonderful. Keep it up. If it isn’t, one might benefit from examining the situation more closely:
1. If the work is unfulfilling, one should determine if it is the work itself or one’s response to it.
2. One benefits from determining one’s options.
3. Developing a path forward provides one with something on which to focus and add coherence to one’s actions.
Work is complex. Throughout one’s life, one will likely work a great deal. Ideally, one is engaged in something interesting and ennobling. Part of this resides in the work. Part of this resides in the individual. Making a fulfilling career is a lot of work, but it can also form the basis for some of the most rewarding experiences in life. Doing so is worth the effort.
