# Word Selection

The words we use can sometimes be revealing. This is particularly the case when somebody is talking about their future. Some people refer to “finding” their way. Other people discuss their future in terms of “making” their way. Two radically different world views are potentially contained in these two words. People finding their way are looking for their future to unfold before them. Those making their way are actively engaged in creating it. The former is passive; the latter is active. Being attuned to people’s words provides potential insight into their assumptions and perspectives on how the world works. These mental models go on to shape and constrain our thoughts and actions. What is found is influenced by what one seeks. Those who understand the power of words take great care in what they say. Our words both reflect and constrain our thinking. Perhaps we would benefit from making better selections in finding our way of communicating with each other.
