# Winning a game on the first try is tough

Like many people, I find the first time playing a complex board game frustrating. I shared recently that this feeling is similar to attempting to position a company in a new and growing market:
- The rules may be clear, but the guiding principles to navigate the various strategic pitfalls are not.
- There needs to be a commitment to adaptation. A less rigid approach is more flexible and increases the available paths of course correction if the early assumptions were wrong.
- It can be challenging to win on the first try, but the best will learn quickly and be a contender on the 2nd try.
- The other players won't wait for you to watch YouTube videos for hours to get the perfect strategy worked out, so you have to commit to some trial and error.
One further push of the analogy is that a new market is like an elementary school recess game in that the rules will change some. There is some warning about the type of rule change, but the specifics are never clear.
