# Where Are You At Work

Along a four-square grid of interest and importance, one can occupy any location at work depending on one’s autonomy and variety of tasks. If lucky, one can avoid as much administrivia (i.e., uninteresting and unimportant work) as possible. However, the remaining three categories offer something: hobbies, research, and projects. If the work is a hobby (i.e., interesting but unimportant), one will likely find accomplishing these tasks personally fulfilling. If the work is a project (uninteresting but important), one will likely find this work professionally rewarding. One might initially think that research, which is both interesting and important, would be the most desired type of work with which to engage. Whereas there is certainly benefit from operating within this realm, it can be all-consuming and alienating. Knowing one’s location in this grid at work is potentially useful. The type of work with which one is engaged will help inform how much effort to invest and the expected personal and professional return from the investment. One’s task location should inform the approach to work execution. Where are you and what are you doing?
