# When to Rebel

For those born with a rebellious nature, getting a job might not only be difficult, but it might also seem altogether antithetical to one’s goals. They want to dismantle “the system,” not join it. However, it might be that rebelling against the system is not effectively done without direct experience with the system. If this is the case, it might be beneficial to join it first and rebel against it second. In the process, one will learn some important insights. First, frequently, the people are not “the enemy.” The people within the system are often normally good people. Some are annoying, some are arrogant, some are incompetent, many are nice, and many are simply trying to make their way through a complex and challenging existence. The system might need dismantling. This does not mean the people within it need to be attacked. Second, the organization often operates under the assumption, and sometimes pronouncement, that it is doing something important and good. Maybe this is true. Perhaps it is propaganda. Either way, it is beneficial to understand what people think they are doing if one attempts to explain to them that they should stop or change it. Lastly, one might find that one wants to own a house, go out to eat, and vacation. One might want the life of working within the system rather than rebelling against it. Of course, there is a risk. By perpetuating it, one might join the system only to find that one can be successful, perhaps highly successful. This might be one of the strongest dynamics that bolster the status quo. Maybe the best time to rebel is when the action isn’t considered rebellion. If one becomes successful enough, acts of rebellion are viewed as role modeling. Maybe things can be improved if those in power remember what they thought when they wanted to rebel and then show that one can be that way within the system. People have a complex mix of needs and aspirations. Work is the process through which many of these are understood and realized. Rebelling at the start might frustrate obtaining them. Rebelling at the end might help others get them faster. Whatever we as a society have been doing does not seem to be working. We need to challenge what makes sense as we attempt to find something better. It appears that the time to rebel is now.
