# What Remains the Same By:: [[Ross Jackson]] 2023-12-14 There is a great deal of discussion about how generations and societies change. Often, the perspective is on how the younger generation isn’t like the previous generations. The focus is sometimes on education. It is almost always focused, at least in part, on how the younger generation wants to work. The perspective is almost always negative. Technology plays a role in this. As computers and telecommunications have improved and enabled virtual work, younger workers want to adopt this approach for most or all of their work. Things change. But there is something more. People look to their parents for guidance. They might not ask for it, but children observe. If people see that their parents are happy and fulfilled by work, they want to approach work similarly. If people see their parents are frustrated by the work struggle, they want to approach work differently. If you want to understand why the younger generation holds the views towards work that it does, look at their parents. If the parents came home exhausted and frustrated daily from work, who would want to double down on that approach? How a generation wants to work changes. It changes for a variety of valid and idiosyncratic reasons. But even through that change, some things remain the same. The younger generation still wants to work. They want to enter a career that holds potential for advancement. They want to achieve success and enjoy their life. Much of the core remains the same. Focusing on how they want to do this is changing, and neglecting all that remains the same distorts our understanding. It is their lives. We can judge them in condescension or help them achieve whatever happiness they envision and enact. #### Related Items [[Work]] [[Change]] [[Children]] [[Technology]] [[Purpose]] [[Understanding]]
