Work can be a series of waiting for what we dread. If we are uncomfortable with public speaking, work can sometimes require that we present information. If we do not enjoy travel, work can sometimes require trips away. If we do not seek the company of others, work can sometimes require interaction and proximity with our colleagues. The actual event might be something minor, and after it is experienced, it potentially wasn’t a big deal. All of that is fine. The issue is that all the time waiting for what we dread is consequential. It takes a toll on our well-being. There are approaches one can take to confront and potentially overcome this dynamic. One can assess the aspects one dreads, and attempt to tackle them head-on. One can attempt to avoid those aspects by proposing an alternative approach or sending a substitute. Or one might simply ignore the aspects for as long as possible and simply attempt to minimize the amount of thought given to the topic before the experience. However, one approaches the situation, there is a benefit to thinking about this phenomenon in a general way. How much time should one be required to wait for something one dreads to work?
