In the 1970s there was a poster that stated, “Register your discontent. Vote.” The right to vote is the bedrock of democracy. As a society, voting is how we elect our representatives and by extension how we indicate policy preferences. Safe, free, and fair elections are essential for society to accept the results. Along with these elements, America has prided itself on the peaceful transfer of power. All these things are easier when times are good. When the current situation and forecasted future are less optimistic, it is more challenging to hold this civic [[Virtue]]. More challenging, but even more essential. The American experiment with democracy is only as sound as our elections. Our society has shown its robustness in dealing with policy disagreements when we collectively engage in democracy, have confidence in the process, and accept peacefully the results even when they are contrary to our wishes. Each of the three is essential. Vote! Our society needs your voice. Vote! Verify the results. Vote! Accept the results until the next election. Democracy doesn’t mean one gets what one wants. Democracy means one gets a say in what gets done. Speak your mind – Vote!
