# Uncompressed Idea Exchange

Language limits our thoughts and existence. If one resides within America, is one a Democrat, Republican, or Independent? By asking this question, I've immediately limited the options to one of three. Most will not provide a fourth option. Additionally, consider what it means to be a member of one of these groups. One's brain likely conjures up a series of words and ideas that tie to some definition of those parties. But language and definitions are alive and evolving. What a Republican today is not what a Republican was 100 years ago. Yet, words like Democrat and Independent suggest that nothing has changed. The words constrain what we think these political parties stand for. In reality, they shift and move. They build coalitions and redefine their existence. If one believes they have always been a Democrat, one will likely be stuck believing that they are, even if they objectively are not based on policy and value alignment. Whenever we give something a name, we categorize it, and immediately, our thoughts are constrained. This is the power of words. If one chooses to challenge the status quo and be more analytical in understanding the world, one must fight against the constraints of our language. Categories limit what one believes is possible. Categories move and cause one to believe things that may no longer be true. Language is the exchange of compressed information, and whenever information is compressed and exchanged, something is lost along the way. It's a great shortcut to communicate quickly, but when truth is at stake, it's valuable to slow down and insist upon uncompressed idea exchange and interrogation. Creating space for this might be the most significant thing any politician, executive, or organizational leader could achieve.
