# Types of Managers - The Traveler By:: [[Ross Jackson]] 2023-01-14 There is always someplace else to be. The traveler-manager finds that someplace else. Always. This type of manager uses work to travel. If there is a meeting with a geographically separated unit, supplier, or client, the traveler-manager will make sure that the meeting requires going there in person. The location does not need to be exotic or exciting. No matter where that location is, the traveler-manager will go there. These decisions will be framed in terms of the value of face-to-face meetings or seeing first-hand the context of what is going on. There is always some backstory as to why travel is required or beneficial. The traveler-manager simply does not want to be in the office. Earning travel miles, hotel points, and avoiding the banality of the daily organizational grind is more than the traveler-manager can pass up. The traveler-manager does not invest in employee development at all. It would be nearly impossible as the traveler-manager is never in the office long enough to interact with the workforce. The work is always “out there,” and only the traveler-manager is “willing” to endure the hardships of being on the road long enough to make sure it is being accomplished. The traveler-manager is committed to the organization, but less so than top performers since much of the travel is suboptimal. Senior management will likely discuss this if the traveler-manager is ever in town long enough to have a meeting with them. #### Related Items [[Management]] [[Business]] [[Types of Managers]]
