If you enjoy autonomy and empowerment, then the micromanager is not for you. The micromanager will hover next to you, constantly inquiring about the status of your work. Make no mistake the micromanager will do this regardless of the quality of work. If you do great work, the micromanager will still be next to you checking in on your progress. The micromanager is unable to trust one’s subordinates. The micromanager is marked by a pronounced lack of confidence and nervousness. The micromanager’s desire to know and control often betrays a doubt that one will be able to effectively manage the outcomes of the organization. The micromanager is attempting to provide oneself with the maximum amount of time to course-correct if something goes wrong. Of course, things seldom go wrong. Day in and day out, the micromanager inquiries about the status of projects that are unfolding predictably well despite the constant barrage of interruptions. In such a situation, the subordinate will likely want to respond by saying something like “why don’t you just do it yourself?” to the manager. The weight of work is compounded when a micromanager won’t get off your back.
