Delusionist managers are detached from reality. They can be obliviously positive to impending disasters, or needlessly negative during success. Delusionists aren’t grounded in organizational reality but rather in one’s own minds. Work execution is assigned and interpreted consistent with the manager’s delusionist leanings. As a consequence, there is a great deal of churn and strategic misalignment in organizations led by a delusionist manager. Pointless tasks will receive priority as essential tasks remain undone. A delusionist manager doesn’t try to convince others that one’s delusion is correct. The delusionist manager can’t understand that anybody would doubt the reality of the delusion; it simply becomes part of the daily routine of the manager. Subordinates under a delusionist manager tend to form a degree of solidarity as they collectively attempt to determine what is going on. Finding alternative sources of information is essential when working for a delusionist manager. Delusions can spread through the upper echelon of organizations as superiors tend to promote those who share their delusion. In fact, an organization might be defined by the collective delusions shared among its leadership.
