# Types of Managers - The Authoritarian

Authoritarian managers seem to enjoy exercising the power of their positions. They are the authority within their spheres of influence, and they don’t want anybody under them to forget it. Things will be done. They will be done on time. They will be done the way the authoritarian wants them. If not, the authoritarian will certainly convey a sense of displeasure with the situation. Power dynamics are essential to the authoritarian. Subordinates are expected to tremble when the authoritarian is nearby. Authoritarians often get a significant amount of work from subordinates, at least in the short run. Whereas subordinates might fear authoritarian managers, they don’t tend to like or respect them. In fact, authoritarian managers tend to engender subversive subordinates. Workers might adopt a stance of malicious compliance. This approach means they will purposively follow the authoritarian manager’s directions to the point of failure, and then respond, “I only did what you told me to do.” Authoritarian managers are isolated quickly and soon discover the limits of their power.
