# Types of Managers - The Agitator

Agitators stir things up organizationally. In fact, the agitator type of manager focuses attention on organizational critique. The agitator may or may not be focused much on employee development. The degree to which the agitator-manager is focused on employees is likely the degree to which one can cultivate critical engagement within the workforce. If the workforce is amenable to radicalization, the agitator manager will cultivate that development. If the workforce is reactionary, the agitator manager will largely ignore them. The agitator is hyper-focused on the organization. In a largely unacknowledged paradox, this type of manager is more focused on the organization than those leading the organization would like. The agitator-manager highlights something important about organizational reality. It is not simply that leadership wants a committed workforce. Leadership wants “the right kind” of commitment. The agitator-manager is fully committed. Organizational leadership wants commitment and obedience. The agitator lacks that second essential element. Perpetual agitation is organizationally unsustainable. Managers unable to balance agitation are quickly avoided.
