# Two Simple Elements of an Effective Strategy

Organizational strategies are notoriously complex. Within those complexities, some aspects are relatively simple. Two such elements are worthy of exploration. A strategy benefits from being compelling. One must understand the direction laid out in the strategy and think that it is ultimately worth pursuing. When the direction lacks this element people tend to shrug their shoulders and return to whatever they were doing. Second, one must be able to see oneself in the enactment of the strategy. This inclusion includes both the execution and enactment of the strategy and the eventual post-implementation operations that follow. If a strategy is compelling and inclusive, it has a chance of being successful. If a strategy is neither, it has little chance of mobilizing the type of personal investment required for its fulfillment. Being able to effectively adapt to changing demands is essential. Doing so in a way that respects the people involved in the process is key. Strategy can help organizations and individuals see a future worthy of investment and action. A compelling strategy reduces complexity to something that resonates in the hearts and minds of the workforce. A jaded and cynical workforce is truly hoping for something better. Often, hope has been diminished. Leaders are those who legitimately and sincerely ignite interest in the future. The complexities of strategy cannot be neglected, but addressing those elements should not obfuscate its simple, compelling, and inclusive essence.
