Events can be definitive. Pearl Harbor, 9/11, the assassination of JFK, and Watergate. Life is often defined by such events, with distinctions made regarding how life was before and after the event. As definitive as these events are, the transition is immediate and incremental. The immediate changes receive most of the attention. The incremental changes are no less important to understand. How individuals and societies process events matters. How individuals and societies respond to events matters. Ideally, the more one processes an event, the more constructive one’s eventual response. Making sense of things is complicated. At the moment, one’s thinking is clouded by emotions. At the moment, one lacks information that adds context and perspective. There is a saying that the only constant is change. However, this is true; not all changes are transitions. The emotional events that cause transitions are significantly different. Understanding transition points provides useful insight into humanity and society.
