Reflecting on elementary schools reveals experiences of things structured and unstructured. Structured learning occurs in lectures. Unstructured learning occurs during quiet reading time. Structured physical activity occurs during gym class. Unstructured physical activity occurs during recess. Structured creativity occurs during art class. Unstructured creativity occurs as one doodles in the margins of one’s worksheet. There is a natural ebb and flow between the structured and unstructured during the school day. These oscillations give one time to reflect and recharge. They provide time for focus and freedom. Work is perhaps too structured. All the hierarchy and planned meetings might miss the importance of unstructured time. Walking, reading something interesting, or having coffee with a colleague could do the trick. Unstructuring the day might produce something more enjoyable and beneficial.
