# They are Such an AI Chatbot By:: [[Brian Heath]] 2023-05-12 Have you ever run across a person who is only as good at their job as a modern AI chatbot? Perhaps you haven't thought it about in these terms - let me explain. Pick an area you are knowledgeable about and ask an AI chatbot some questions about that area. Initially, you might be impressed. It answers the questions well and uses all of the right words. It may even be able to generate good additional or unexpected content. However, as you dive deeper and asked more nuanced and intricate questions, you'll quickly see the flaws and how poorly the AI chatbot "understands" the topic. Part of this is due to the general nature of AI chatbots. They are trained as generalists, so specifics are often missed. However, the other part is that the AI doesn't actually understand anything. It just repeats what has already been said. There is no depth or creation of something entirely new. At best, AI chatbots get a C grade. They barely pass, but they come out of the gate as impressive. It's interesting to me that we are building AI in our own image. How many stories and experiences tell us to not judge a book by its cover? This is because initial impressions are not entirely accurate - especially with people. Yet, we continue to be surprised when someone who seemed to have all the answers begins to stumble, and we realize they have no clue what they are doing. They do not understand anything, but they are great at saying all the right words that have already been spoken. Sounds like an AI chatbot to me. We've replicated some of our greatest flaws and biases within AI to the point that new metaphors will emerge that disparage people by calling them AI. We'll forget that the sequence was actually reversed. In the end, we should not be surprised about this development. It seems an inevitable part of human nature. It's an emergence and persistent property of how we view the world when we don't try to be better. We are who we are, and we develop technology in that image. It doesn't necessarily have to be this way, but change is hard, and the status quo is easy. #### Related Items [[Artificial Intelligence]] [[The Human Condition]] [[People]] [[Jokes]] [[Wisdom]] [[Knowledge]]
