# The Technocratic Approach to Reflection

Once one gets beyond the basic needs of life, such as food and shelter, and into the more complex realm of society, status, belonging, and purpose, few know what they seek. From the outside, they only know to seek but possess no exact intention or purpose. When asked, "What do you seek," many respond in circular responses that go nowhere. Some will say they seek something in particular, but they seek something else when that is given. The complaints and journey for something never seem to end. I suspect this is a human tendency that ebbs and flows in popularity. However, in response to the latest increase in unintentional searching, many organizations are positioning themselves in a parental role focused on making employees or members happy and satisfied. So, they continuously ask what the employees want, the employees respond in many divergent and unintentional ways, the organization attempts to deliver something and asks whether that helped, and the cycle continues as the frustration grows exponentially. As organizations are run by the same people who seek without intention, it is little wonder that this negative feedback loop spirals out of control between the organization and its members or employees. The amount of progress that could be made if people could reflect and develop a clear intention and self-awareness would be mind-boggling. While some have this innate ability, it is a skill that can be taught and developed. We choose to ignore it largely. Instead, we emphasize the technocratic arts and boil down reflection, meditation, and self-actualization to elementary platitudes. For example, "You can be anything you want to be" and "Everything happens for a reason." This is the extent of it, and it is the extent of what we will achieve if one does not look deeper. Should organizations make their members happy? Should people know what they want? Does anyone realize the importance of these questions?
