# The State of Communication By:: [[Brian Heath]] 2022-10-12 Most ideas can be expressed simply and with only a few words. Long, tortured essays expounding endlessly on a topic show one of three things. Either the author does not fully understand the true nature of the idea, the author is a poor communicator, or the author's ego has gotten in the way. This does not always apply to stories intended to entertain, but even here overly long stories tell you more about the author than anything else. In a world that values quantity over quality, it's little wonder that we find ourselves with more data than ever but comparably little human progress and innovation to go with it. Today we've nearly overcome all technological limits of communication. When you think about it, we can't push communication technology much further or faster. We've reached diminishing marginal returns, and the cost of communicating to the world is basically zero. Our brains are now the limiting factor, and entities fight for their attention. But what are we communicating to each other? How much is about 'me' versus an idea worth sharing? The answer is revealing. #### Related Items [[Data]] [[Communication]] [[Ego]] [[Technology]]
