# The Sober Individuals

A classic situational meme is the sober person not enjoying their time around a bunch of people who are drunk and high. Whether the situation arises because the sober person is pregnant, a teetotaler, or the designated driver, the sober individual is in a different state of conscientiousness. This state of conscientiousness is moderate in nearly every way compared to the impaired individuals. After all, it is unlikely that people would take mind and state-altering social drugs if they kept everything normal. In other words, people take drugs to feel the extreme ends of the spectrum. On one side, people take drugs not to care or temporarily forget one's problems. On the other side, people take drugs to feel extreme amounts of happiness and euphoria. These are basically the only types of social drugs people are willing to take when one removes prescription drugs from the equation. Thus, it is little wonder that the sober individual finds their time around nonsober individuals as not enjoyable. Does one enjoy being around a bipolar person whose moods swing wildly from one extreme to another? Does one enjoy being around a person who is also extremely happy? What about a person who cares about nothing at all? We categorically see the extremes as outliers for a reason, and while it is normal to feel them on occasion, to live there is the height of selfishness constantly. When one is continually seeking joy, one only cares about themselves. When one cares about nothing in life or wishes to be numb, one ceases to act in solidarity with humanity and becomes consumed with selfish thoughts and feelings. Yet, when sober individuals say to the group something like I'm not having a good time, they are immediately branded as a selfish person who needs to get with the program. Perhaps it is so, but always consider the source, who comes from a point of authenticity and a position of extremes. Life exists at the edge of order and chaos, where moderation reveals the truth so many are looking for.
