# The Season of Changing

Summer is over. Fall is upon us. The leaves change, the wind gets colder, and pumpkin spice takes over all things retail. People start decorating their homes with fall colors and Halloween inflatables. With the change of seasons comes changes in our highly controlled environments. We spend a lot of time ensuring that our homes and workplaces are isolated from mother nature. Air filters, temperature controls, and walls to keep things out. Yet, we change this environment with the changing of the seasons. New décor, house plants, and food choices. We are at a point in human [[civilization]] where there is no need to change with the season. Fruit of all sorts is available at nearly any time of year and we can easily transform our environments to suit our moods. Pumpkin Spice lattes could exist all year.
So, why do we continue to follow the seasons after spending so much time eliminating them from our daily lives? It's partly traditions passed down over the generations. But I believe it mostly comes from the fact that being comfortable is boring. If everything is always the same, we quickly forget whether what we have is good or bad. It is hard to be grateful for heat when you are always warm. Changing our scenery and diets with the seasons allows deeper [[appreciation]] and engagement with our humanity. Our brains are excellent at noticing differences and trying to make sense of them. If the story is always the same, it's no longer a story or anything noticeable. Change is a part of nature and we are programmed accordingly by it.
As much as we complain about change and the work it causes, it is this change that keeps us alive and curious. When things become boring or unremarkable, it's probably time for a change.
