# The Poetic and the Analytic

Analysis is very good at determining what is going on within an organization. However, It isn’t very good at inspiring people to care. There is no shortage of analysis that was expertly done and summarily ignored. Poetry, or poetically written prose, is very good at touching people’s hearts and unlocking their minds. Poetry may capture a universal truth, but few people look to poetry to inform the status of the current situation. Students are tracked into one program or another through various ways but rarely is a given individual effectively analytically and poetically. This is unfortunate. Whereas there is rarely a want ad for a poet-analyst, this is what organizations need. These are exceedingly rare but valuable. One should engage them with as many senior leaders as possible when they are discovered. Organizational improvements do not occur when one knows what needs to be changed; they occur when people are inspired to do so. This is beyond what can be accomplished by either analysis or poetry alone. Society and organizations would benefit from the sage wisdom of poet-analysts.
