# The Pinch By:: [[Ross Jackson]] 2023-11-02 Most work is executed with little fanfare or notice. One locates and integrates information, analyzes it, and reports it out. There is often a schedule, and the effort takes days, weeks, or months to unfold. Regular work usually recedes into the background. And then there is “the pinch.” Occasionally, there is a task that emerges unexpectedly, with a tight schedule and uncertain success. The pinch is one’s time to shine. Because the task is unexpected and success is unassured, succeeding in the pinch is qualitatively different from doing routine good work. Some people execute good work on routine tasks but do not perform well in the pinch. They become overwhelmed or flustered. Others rise to the occasion. Organizations come to depend on those who perform well in the pinch, as this is when things matter the most. There are unique moments that hold potential. One assembles the information needed to seize those moments, or one doesn’t. The adage “too little, too late” might come to mind for those who fail to perform in the pinch. Performing well in the pinch frequently results in a bonus, recognition, or promotion. At a minimum, it should result in a sincere thank you. Unfortunately, performing well in a pinch can become expected by those in higher echelon positions if one can do it repeatedly. The lack of recognition or appreciation can’t diminish the sense of accomplishment and the thrill of uncertain victory. #### Related Items [[Work]] [[Speed]] [[Routine]] [[Awards]] [[Organization]]
