# The Hubris of Creation By:: [[Brian Heath]] 2024-04-21 Humans are incapable of creation. The act of making something out of nothing is universally beyond us. Everything we have 'created' is the synthesizing of things together into a newly recognized entity. This applies to works of art, theories, and children. None of these emerged out of nothing. The art came from the artist's experiences and available materials and energy. The theories of the day are derived from past theories and observations. Our children are the combination of genetic material, time, and energy. So, humans are not creators but synthesizers. To think otherwise gives humanity too much credit and hubris. It also limits how one thinks about and responds to the world as a human. If one thinks humans create, one innately spends little time on the systemic nature of the universe. Instead, one must make the future or thing they want out of nowhere as part of their right as a human. If one thinks humans synthesize, one innately must understand one's place in the universe and how the puzzle pieces might fit together to form something better. Intuitively, most of us recognize the difference and are guided accordingly. But we fail to explicitly call out that we are not creators or capable of creating. No one got to where they are by creating it. We synthesize our path. Some run across excellent raw materials to work with; others miss out. The tragedy is the lost synthesis from those who 'missed out' because of the hubris of those who believe they are creators. #### Related Items [[Creative]] [[Synthesis]] [[The Human Condition]] [[Progress]] [[Luck]] [[Systems Thinking]]
