# The Holiday Perspective

Upon returning to work after a holiday, it is not common for people to say it was good to get away, clear their heads, and recharge. The sense is that this time away allows the employee to be more engaged, energized, and enthusiastic about their job. This is one way to view vacations or holiday breaks. But, this narrative seems a bit too optimistic and flowery for the organizational realities of many workers. It is too close to what managers want to hear, so we play the game and say the words. For me, time away from organizational work highlights how insignificant most modern organizational problems are on the whole. Does it really matter if the made-up metric is 3 or 4? Does it really matter if an artificial deadline is missed by a few days? Does it matter if I wasn't involved in 20 hours of meetings last week that resulted in nothing? These are the things most organizations want you to focus on. They are easy to see, control, and measure but are mostly insignificant. It is easy to get caught up in them as we've been trained our entire life to obey industrial organizational authority. However, time away provides a healthy antidote and perspective. The challenge is how to honor this perspective all year.
