# The Developmental Bind of Metamodern Managers - Synthesis A By:: [[Ross Jackson]] 2025-12-23 Metamodern management will not save the day. It should likely be pursued anyway. Management is ideological and therefore paradigmatic. Much of management has been defined by the modern paradigm. Some of management has come to be defined by postmodern thinking. Not much of management has yet been defined by a metamodern paradigm. This isn’t inherently a problem. Paradigms aren’t right; they are only potentially useful. Each paradigm has its own unique set of pitfalls, blind spots, and strengths. The debate between modern and postmodern is well defined. Little is to be achieved in that war. After all, nobody ever wins a war; there are only losers. Rather than engage there, it is potentially useful to explore the benefits of a metamodern perspective further. Metamodernity offers what modernity requires, and postmodernity prohibits. Unifying concepts are useful to organizations and societies. Modernity had a host of unifying concepts baked into its ideology. It is no wonder that conformity was so prominent when this paradigm dominated the ideological landscape. Likewise, with the growing prominence of postmodern perspectives, it is little wonder that society has been increasingly marked by fragmentation. Metamodernity sees the value in unifying concepts, but does not require that any notions of truth, propriety, or morality sustain them. The unity built under metamodernity is one that is joined because it seems to work. When it doesn’t or no longer does, a new perspective will emerge, be cultivated, and offered as one around which unity can form. Metamodernity is pragmatic if anything is. Its pragmatism aligns well with management, organizational theory, and capitalism. Metamodernity is radical without being revolutionary.
