# The Critical Path of Discomfort

Discomfort can be a confusing clue when it comes to finding the most critical path to success, whether that be learning a new skill, helping a friend, or launching a new program or company. As you feel more uncomfortable, are you getting colder or warmer?
In most cases, discomfort is a symptom of tension, best defined as a personalized discrepancy between what is and what one would like. This tension could be felt in knowledge, skills, or character areas. Often when doing something new, this tension produces action, necessarily.
Could the likelihood of achieving success (in whatever you are pursuing) directly correlate with the willingness to embrace the discomfort of not choosing a path paved by things that already are but paved by the most critical items, regardless of the amount of tension felt? I think so.
