Here are ways to tell if an organization is experiencing an existential crisis or threat:
1. Human resources stops pretending, at least in private
2. Analysts start talking about black swan events and miracles
3. Mondays and Fridays are very quiet
4. Rumors, no matter the source, spread extremely quickly
5. Executives are "out" or "busy" a lot with no explanation
6. Leaders start asking the employees for their ideas, at least in modern organizations
7. People talk a lot about how the organization is differentiated from others
8. True believers expound upon how they are in it for the long haul
9. "Moonshot" projects become the primary focus of everyone's work
10. How the organization talks and thinks about metrics fundamentally changes
The more of these are observed, the exponentially worse the crisis and threat. However, in all likelihood, most modern organizations are always at a 5 out of 10.
