# Tedious and Rewarding

There are aspects of work that are tedious and rewarding. It is challenging to work through the tedium to reach fulfillment. Those who are strategic thinkers have an easier time. Others give up and move to something “more exciting.” A quality that is increasingly out of fashion in our society is discipline. Being able to buckle down and slug it out, to grind, is an asset. Discipline is required to accomplish almost everything of merit. Our society valorizes being an athlete and being a soldier. Both fields require discipline. Discipline is enforced, and people are subservient to a directing authority. Whereas that form of discipline is useful in those contexts, it is not the type of discipline discussed here. The type of discipline needed to make great accomplishments is self-discipline. The ability to self-regulate, make decisions that align with a long-term goal, and execute those decisions is in short supply. Some of the most rewarding things are achieved after years of tedium. Many have the desire for that success, but few have the discipline.
