# Taking Breaks

It is important to take breaks. Too much of one thing is fatiguing. It’s beneficial to allow one’s mind and body to disengage from one way of being and engage in another. This used to be somewhat automatic. In grade school, one had recess breaks throughout the day. As one advanced through school, these breaks were reduced in number and duration. The logic was that one did not need these breaks as one got older. Older bottles of Dr. Pepper had the numbers 10, 2, and 4 on them. These numbers were an advertisement based on a study that found that workers would crash around 10:30 AM, 2:30 PM, and 4:30 PM. People would need a boost around 10, 2, and 4 to get through the day. Other cultures incorporate afternoon naps into their days. Our culture appears to be hyper-focused on work—few breaks, if any, and no naps. Get to work! Is this approach beneficial, and if so, who derives the benefit? Breaks renew energy and provide perspective. Enlightened management encourages them. Those operating under the mindset of the industrial revolution don’t. In dealing with such people, the first response should be, “Give me a break.” If they refuse, then “take” a break.
