# Submitting Work Promptly Late

Submitting work promptly and submitting work late are incompatible. However, when one has worked a bit, it becomes clear that it is possible to be behind schedule, but ahead of expectations, it is possible to submit work promptly late. How can this happen? If a person has sent a task via email with a deadline for a requested submission, but the person did not receive the email, and the person sends a follow-up email after the first deadline, which the individual does receive and responds promptly to the follow-up email, one has submitted work promptly late. Such a situation is likely irksome for both involved. However, it is suggestive of the reality that most “deadlines” are simply desired-by dates. The second email would have been useless if it had been an actual deadline.
