One of the more useful analytic techniques is structural groupings. Determining what elements might be beneficially aggregated [[together]] and if any of the aggregations exist in a hierarchical relationship is constructive for thinking. If this is done analytically it might make use of clustering techniques. If this is done thematically it might make use of conceptual relationships. Whichever technique is used one is attempting to provide order from [[chaos]].
While there is certainly a repeatable outcome when this is done analytically, often the point of this exercise is insight rather than accuracy. Thinking of things in terms of groups allows one to get above the individual data. Structural groupings provide one with a vantage point from which to see higher-order patterns which might not be observable or understandable at the individual datum level.
An interesting aspect of such an exercise is the various ways one could propose groupings. Demographic categories are often used. When done analytically the group will form based on algorithms. By looking at the data one may or may not see demographic influences on the groupings. It might be that the groupings exist and then one creates some sort of label to differentiate among the observed groups. This points to an interesting phenomenon. Analytic-based structural groupings can be determined, and once identified named. Once a label is affixed, the group might start identifying with that construction and broadening its actions beyond the original scope of the analysis. In short, individuals might be acting individually in a way that is consistent with some overarching grouping convention. Once grouped, those individuals might start acting collectively.
Structural groupings can be latent, emergent, and generative. Analytics can help identify groups. Once identified the structural groupings can develop further in ways consistent or amplified. Such developments require focus and potential reassessments.
