There is a great deal of talk about strategy in Corporate America. Given all this focus, one might conclude that workers are forward-looking and thinking. In some cases, they are. Often, people are simply focused on the execution of near-term assignments. However banal, one can still approach these tasks strategically. Some assignments are strategically important, and care should be taken. Some assignments are not strategically important but are still valuable. Other tasks are neither strategically important nor valuable. Perhaps less focus is required of those tasks. Also, it is beneficial for workers to assess what they are truly attempting to accomplish through the execution of work. If one is attempting to gain a promotion, more effort and attention are likely required than simply attempting to maintain one’s current position. Thinking strategically at work is how one determines where one is attempting to go and how much effort is appropriate to get there.
