# Societal Hope from the Growing Number of Layoffs By:: [[Brian Heath]] 2024-06-03 It is human nature to acclimate and become accustomed to one's environment, no matter how good or bad that environment may be. Our brains quickly ignore the repetition and seek out the novel as if they say, "I get it, but what about this slightly different thing over here." As a result, we quickly forget to question the status quo and explore the mundane. When the mundane and routine ends, we hardly know what to do with ourselves. Some will seek to reestablish it, others will get lost and only return, and very few will embrace the change and adapt to a new normal. Given the rising number of layoffs and the increasingly cavalier nature of organizations around hiring and firing, many more people are experiencing a departure from the status quo of work. One goes from endless meetings and additional assignments within a restricted environment to no meetings, structure, and relatively extreme amounts of freedom. What does one do with this time? Unfortunately, many lack the financial freedom to do anything other than making looking for another job their new full-time job. As a result, one quickly resumes the status quo of endless meetings (interviews) and additional assignments (applying to jobs). Many never get the chance to reevaluate their new surroundings and challenge the status quo. However, some will have the option to reconsider their path. Most will just instinctively return to work behaviors as those with no choice. But a few will pause to ponder their position and the status quo. These few individuals have a great deal of responsibility when it comes to evolving our societal system into something new that is in solidarity with all those who have no choice. The opportunity to have some amount of systemic freedom is a gift to themselves and society as a whole. The fate of "better" rests solely at the feet of these individuals. Let's hope they are resolved enough and in large enough numbers to make a meaningful difference. #### Related Items [[Layoffs]] [[Hope]] [[Work]] [[Status Quo]] [[Change]] [[Radicals]] [[Solidarity]] [[Society]]
