# Societal Bad Advice

America is a society that valorizes perseverance. This can be seen in movies like Rudy and Rocky. There is an inspiration when one overcomes adversity through grit and determination. If there were a competition for an American slogan, “Never Give Up,” would likely score well. Whether explicit or implicit, this is bad advice as a rule. There are, of course, times when perseverance is needed and admirable. But there are just as many times when one should simply quit and do something else. When individuals quit work, organizations experience a cost. They must find somebody else to do that job, and in the meantime, they must do more work as they cover those responsibilities. It is important to examine this strategically. If there is some sort of benefit derived through the accomplishment, one should persist. If there is nothing but more drudgery, day after day, there is no valor in perseverance. Leave. It is worth noting that in the end, Rocky was left nearly blind and significantly brain-damaged.
