# Single Issue People

People frequently attempt to reduce complexity. In a society, a host of essential problems exist. For some, the panoramic of problems is too complex, and those people tend to narrow their focus on a single issue. That issue could be immigration, abortion, defense, taxes, or any other issue from the list. This one issue becomes the fulcrum for all decisions. One problem with this myopic approach is that the single issue does not address anywhere near the totality of problems a society faces. Another problem with this approach is that even if that one problem is addressed satisfactorily, one could find that all other aspects are so poorly addressed that society is made worse. When these concerns are brought up to single-issue people, they often respond with “I don’t care.” This captures the dynamics of the situation well. In their simple world, the issue of focus is all that matters. If something is outside of the boundaries of that issue, they don’t care. That is a problem. Seldom does apathy produce socially desirable outcomes. Single-issue people are part of the problem. Ignoring complexity does not make it go away. It simply makes it unaddressed. Neglect allows these issues to fester. In the age of choice, one can make almost any decision imaginable. One can follow the nihilists and decide that nothing matters. One can be single-issue and decide that only one thing is essential. One can also embrace the complexity of challenges and work with others in solidarity to find temporary, balanced solutions that require maintenance and adjustments. Only one approach provides a basis for a coherent, compassionate, adjusted society capable of progress. It would be ironic to suggest this should be our single focus moving forward, but it certainly deserves more attention than it currently receives.
