# Simply Shocking By:: [[Ross Jackson]] 2023-03-29 When thinking about times that I have been shocked, a general pattern emerged. I had in my mind a set of outcomes. What happened was outside of my thinking and I was subsequently shocked by it. Sometimes the occurrence is highly improbable. Other times, my expectations were simply too narrow, and I was excluding outcomes that really weren’t all that improbable. In assessing strategic outcomes, it is useful to determine the panoramic of potentiality. Knowing what could happen and how likely it is to happen is useful. Thinking along these lines will reduce the number of times one is shocked by what happens. By reducing the number of times one is shocked, one has a more solid foundation for understanding and action. As one’s competition is reeling in disbelief, one can move forward faster - taking advantage of what comes from not needing to recalibrate. The fact that individuals and organizations do not manage this aspect of strategic planning is simply shocking. #### Related Items [[Strategy]] [[Planning]] [[Thinking]] [[Probability]] [[Action]]
