# Sales Proves an Organizational Better Exists

Throughout my career, I've had many experiences working with and for the sales function of organizations. As a result, I've learned a lot about sales, but I'd say that I'm far from an expert. I understand the theory, practices, and mindsets that seem prevalent within sales, but I innately struggle to execute much of what I see. However, beyond selling, I've observed other common behaviors of how salespeople act within organizations. Primarily, they view everything as an argument up for negotiation. There is no singular truth unless it is their own belief. For example, I've seen many times where the data shows a sales performance problem. Good salespeople are unphased by this organizational argument. They pivot the discussion about issues with organizational systems, metrics, and lack of freedom. Then they expound upon the fundamental issues with whatever they are selling. Inevitably, they have good points because no systems and metrics are perfect, and good salespeople need the freedom to adapt to situations. Furthermore, if a sales team is required to sell a product, you can probably guess that the product does not sell itself - so something is wrong with it from a pure free-market perspective. Eventually, it comes down to whether the organization and the salesperson feel like continuing to put up with each other. Most salespeople have no issues switching jobs, and organizations have completely excepted this as the norm for sales. So, why do I bring all of this up? It seems the sales function has found fundamental truths about life in organizations and a way to exist beyond what most people accept as the organizational status quo. Furthermore, they have done it so well that this new way of being is their status quo. Everything is an argument for negotiation, organizational systems are imperfect, they need the freedom to do their job, they leave when they can't stand it anymore, and, if they all do it together, organizations accept this as reality. This is proof that much of what we talk about here is possible.
