# STICKY Test By:: [[Steven Denman]] 2023-06-30 I recently reread the Heath brothers' book, "Made to Stick," and I enjoyed that they employed the same communication techniques they were encouraging. In rereading it, not much was said, but it was said well. Here are six ways to communicate why you should read the book (in the framework the book uses) **Simple** - Public speaking is easier to critique than improve; the book's six ideas guide improvement. **Unexpected** - Public speaking is the #10 cause of death worldwide. Not really, it is tuberculosis, but you would think so from the fear brought on by speaking publicly. There are no recorded instances of speaking-related stress deaths... check out Made to Stick to get closer to reality. **Concrete** - Awkwardly introducing yourself, forgetting to turn on your microphone, having a slideshow technology issue, forgetting your transition, telling a joke that doesn't land, seeing blank stares, and not getting much encouragement after - that's seven reasons why gaining confidence and making your ideas stickier is a good idea. **Credible** - Studies show that people forget 50% of a speech's content within an hour, 70% within a day, and 90% within a week. Contrast that with the over 70% of the population who fears speaking publicly - Made to stick is a great resource to help the 180M adults who are overthinking it. **Emotional/Story** - I recently had a friend get physically sick before giving a 20-minute lecture. The audience knew something was off from the delayed start and seeing her spouse and others scrambling to support and try and identify alternatives. With a teary-eyed start, she persevered, but the difficulty preparing the week leading up and the embarrassment after were enough to continue the cycle of crippling public speaking anxiety. Books like "Made to Stick" empower people with simple tools to gain greater confidence and freedom to speak their minds. (sniffle, sniffle - this is loosely based on a true story) #### Related Items [[Fear]] [[Ideas]] [[Communication]] [[Speech]] [[Methodology]]
