# Routine Versus Creativity

A recent push has been to develop Leader Standard Work to optimize the workday. The concept is that employees have a set schedule for their desks where time is put on the calendar for specific tasks. This ensures such tasks are given the proper attention at appropriate intervals. Tasks are further defined with work instructions that standardize processes across desks.
It’s a structure that can work well when both goals and responsibilities are clear. Conversely, it’s a structure that can have gaps on a professional desk where there is more ambiguity. Furthermore, it is not a structure that fosters creativity. In an environment where innovation sets a company apart from its competition, one must question if rigid Leader Standard Work is truly the way of the future. While it is important to ensure routine tasks are prioritized properly to keep a company running smoothly, it is equally important that employees be given opportunities to ideate. This freedom is what will lead to market-changing concepts.
