Where an individual or organization allocates its resources reveals its values. Analytics has a great deal to contribute to resource allocation decisions. Through applied analytics one can compare various resource allocations, and select an approach strategically aligned with one’s intent. This can be done in a multitude of ways. One can analyze resource allocations using net present value analysis, simulation, or linear and nonlinear [[forecasting]]. As challenging as it might be, the analysis is the easy part. At least two aspects of the resource allocation dilemma are significantly more challenging. First, to achieve coherence in one’s resource allocation, one must understand, if not also declare, one’s values. Resources are allocated to do something. That something competes with other things that could be done but won’t be. Second, one must have the discipline to do it. Without these two actions, the analysis is simply an academic exercise or one that is momentarily consequential. Individuals and organizations can benefit from analysis. To do so, they need to understand their values and commit to action. Decisions of resource allocation reveal the benefit of a values-analysis-action approach. Whereas other situations might be more complex, this relatively simple approach is a constructive starting point for thinking about how analytics might be beneficially applied.
