# Reasons for the Bomb to Drop

Increasingly, big idea thinkers about society and geopolitics believe it's not a matter of if a nuclear bomb will be dropped out of anger but when. Thirty-five years ago, such ideas were common, but they fell out of favor since the end of the Cold War. However, there have been blimps of concern with the concept of dirty bombs in the hands of terrorists. Mainly having grown up when nuclear bombs were not considered an imminent threat, I can say that I think very little about nuclear war. That being said, I suspect we will look back at this time as highly abnormal. Since World War II, things have been pretty quiet on the war front, thanks in large part to the immense amounts of suffering seen first-hand by so many but also by the threat of a nuclear holocaust. Now, we are reaching the end of the generations who have memories of such things, and I essentially believe we'll see a return of massive suffering because so many are out of touch with how dark humanity is and can be. The systems, society, and culture created by the generations with first-hand knowledge of these horrors only perpetuate this forward. The ideologies put in place were intended to shield their children from living similar experiences, but over time, we've lost the ability to rationalize the complexities involved and mitigate the risks of extremism and tolerance. Furthermore, the socioeconomic systems established to connect us all and minimize the likelihood of destroying one's neighbor have reached it's shelf life. As currently conceived, global capitalism can no longer sustain itself, just as a Ponzi scheme cannot sustain itself forever. Evidence of this can be seen in all the financial engineering to keep the myth alive. This is not to say that everything is wrong about capitalism. Still, its promise of infinite growth is an impossibility, and the accumulation of wealth by the few on top is the definition of toppling over. There is no such thing as a free lunch. So, we have generations of people unprepared to deal with conflict existing within a system that is ready to topple over. The nuclear bomb seems entirely inevitable. When it does drop (metaphorically or literally), it will usher in the next iteration of humanity. Only time will tell whether this is the end or just the beginning.
