# Read, Drink Coffee, and Write

What is the essence of one’s work? If I boiled down what I enjoy the most about my work as an analyst it would be that I get to read, drink coffee, and write. This description is not minimizing it. Being an analyst is a career in which people get to read. Sometimes what one reads is information about an analytic approach one hasn’t used before. Sometimes what one reads is internal documents about the company. Reading is part of “figuring ‘it’ out.” Each project requires the analyst to determine what is to be done, reading is frequently part of that process. I enjoy reading and being an analyst allows me to do so. Likewise, I enjoy drinking coffee. The life of an analyst allows one to drink coffee as one reads and writes. In other jobs, drinking coffee can only be done on a specified break. It is a luxury to be able to drink coffee as one works rather than only at occasional points in one’s day. Lastly, reports and presentations are often required to close out a given analytic project. Again, this is a part of the work I enjoy. There is something gratifying about creating a finished product that explains the effort well. This process folds into itself, as a well-crafted report can form the basis of somebody else’s reading. And so it goes. This doesn’t mean that there aren’t frustrations. Work is work. There will always be frustration when dealing with humans in action. But there is a benefit from understanding what one likes and assessing if one’s career cultivates what one enjoys in life.
