# Quality over Entertainment

It is increasingly easy to be entertained. In fact, it is nearly impossible to escape entertainment. It is everywhere. One might wonder why so much free entertainment is easily obtainable, perhaps unavoidable. What is in short supply is quality. What is quality? This is certainly a deep philosophical area worthy of inquiry and debate. Here, quality is defined as the attribute that makes an experience uplifting. One can experience quality reading, music, conversations, meetings, films, food, or many alternative manifestations. The thing uniting all these disparate examples is that when quality is present, these things enrich one’s life. At the extreme, experiencing quality can help one become a better person. The problem is that entertainment is almost always devoid of quality. The very increasing abundance of entertainment makes experiencing quality more difficult. One must work to cultivate a quality experience. Most people do not think in these terms, so their lives are filled with entertainment that consumes time without benefit. This is likely least examined in terms of work. The absurdities of organizational reality can entertain one. Sometimes it seems that to be entertained by work is the only thing one can do. One can attempt to find, cultivate, and experience quality at work. When quality is the focus, things get better.
