There are things in life that require preparation. Colleges and work have orientation sessions, the military has boot camps, and athletic teams have practice and skills-development camps. Even before these, one was engaged in earlier forms of preparation. Preparation can be challenging. First, one is acquiring a new set of skills. This can be frustrating. Second, the preparation might take longer than one’s interest. One might prepare, get bored, and move on before the preparation is used meaningfully. Lastly, one might prepare only to find that one isn’t very good at the activity. Preparation is hard; it is fatiguing. Effective preparation requires dedication and discipline. These attributes are in short supply. If one wants to accomplish something, it is useful to consider the necessary preparation. Becoming a lawyer or an expert craftsperson requires years of dedicated preparation. Not everybody who starts on the path finishes. People are diverted for a variety of reasons. Sometimes the reason is simply that it requires more work than the individual wants to invest. There is nothing inherently wrong with reassessing one’s priorities. However, it is tragic when preparation fatigue blocks one from an obtainable goal. Preparation is work, and work can be a drag. Finding a way to sustain motivation is one of the keys to overcoming this. As we prepare for the next thing, let’s try to find people who encourage us to persevere in the face of banality.
