There are many forms of power. Some power comes from the position one holds. Some power comes from one’s wealth. Power can also come from charisma, knowledge, or solidarity. A form of power that is seldom discussed is perspectival power. The ability to understand things from a variety of common and uncommon perspectives is a form of power. A good litmus test is if one can understand why people hold the views that they hold. This does not mean one accepts the views as one’s own. It simply means that one “gets it.” Perspectival power allows one to broker deals between people of different views. Perspectival power is the power of building bridges. People tend to rest on their dominant form of power. If a person in a position of authority is limited to that form of power, declarations will be made based ex cathedra. If a person has position power and charisma power, the person will likely use charisma with the position power being left in the subtext. Each of the forms has limits. Relationships are not exclusively defined by asymmetry in power. Power does influence interpersonal dynamics. Perspectival power is the form of power that best understands the ebb and flow of the nexus among these various forms of power. Those with perspectival power are the ones who can assemble the various forms of power needed to accomplish a given goal. This is how things get done with organizations.
