# Panel Discussions as Solidarity in Praxis

Solidarity figures prominently in many of these blog posts. At its core, solidarity is an awareness and cultivation of the sense that we are all in “this” together. Superficially, this can be reduced to simply being employed by the same organization or being on the same team. Whereas these elements are often associated with solidarity, they are neither necessary nor sufficient for establishing that form of connection. Solidarity is something more. Panel discussions can reveal solidarity in praxis. When done well, panel discussion provides space for individual authenticity and autonomy, but also shared space for solidarity. Each participant has a unique depth and focus, as this is the basis for the person’s inclusion on the panel. But the concern being examined is multifaceted enough that it benefits from different perspectives, domains, and insights. Sadly, people sometimes view panel discussions as a competition. They aren’t. Nobody wins a panel discussion. There is no glory in the failure of another. Rather, successful panel discussions help synthesize information through collaboration. The solidarity of the panel can be extended to include the audience so that all those engaged contribute and benefit from the experience. At a panel discussion, each participant has a chair. Literally and metaphorically, they are not vying for the same spot. From their unique spot, each member has something to offer for contemplation and consideration. The interactions can contribute to building understanding, respect, connection., and shared contribution to efforts beyond oneself. This is solidarity in praxis.
