# Our Newspapers

A long time ago, I was at a conference at which international members were in attendance. At breakfast, one of the international attendees responded in disgust at the quality of American newspapers. I was intrigued, so I asked about the issue with American newspapers. The person responded that they weren’t newspapers at all; they were advertisements and coupon books with news sprinkled around them. The person explained that European newspapers did not contain advertisements and coupons but contained fully developed news articles covering topics of social relevance and consequence. Our newspapers fell way short of that. As I said, that was a long time ago. Our news coverage has declined considerably since then. Whereas other media have increased in prominence, news from those sources certainly isn’t more developed than what was covered in newspapers. What can we conclude from this? There is very little demand in America to be informed. Consequently, it doesn’t take much for any given individual to be among the most informed American. There is a pronounced strategic advantage to being informed. It is relatively easy to become informed. It is bizarre that so many fail to make the obvious connection here.
