# Oh, and One More Thing...

When dealing with management, there is perhaps no preamble more unnerving than the dreaded, “Oh, and one more thing…”. Usually, this statement comes after an already unpleasant conversation. The manager has likely given one a list of things to correct or to accomplish, perhaps both. This approach is often used when the manager wants to quickly exit after dropping this last item. This late addition implies that one should understand this is a one-way transmission. The manager will say one last thing. The subordinate will listen and leave. Often, the last item is the one that will receive the most thought. It is unclear if managers do this instinctively, subconsciously, or intentionally. Whatever their intent, such an approach often feels like the manager is piling on. Feedback and direction can be beneficial. Sometimes, managers give neither. When a manager tacks on the “one more thing,” listen. This is often the thing the manager is the least comfortable discussing. This reveals something about the manager that can be useful. Understanding this is potentially useful.
